For the next little while, I’ll be featuring female artists that performed here in Halifax during the Halifax Pop Explosion Music Festival.
It’s a great way to hear from other artists about their creative inspiration, why they started with music & how, and a few other items to really get to know the person behind music!
And this next triple-threat artist (she’s not only a singer and songwriter but an actress too!) will be gracing the stage not once, but twice during the festival! And if her YouTube channel is any indication, this soulful artist will definitely get you up & moving during her performance!
Hailing from Toronto, this will be Tanika’s first time performing at the Halifax Pop Explosion Music Festival, but not her first visit to the beautiful seaside city of Halifax. Read on to find out what she plans to do during her visit, why she decided to get into music, & her must-have essential when she’s on tour and on the road!
Name: Tanika Charles
Occupation/Artistic Title: Singer/Songwriter/Actress
How long have you been performing?
Professionally since 2010.
When & why did you decide to get into music?
I’ve always loved music. I decided to make a go at a solo career after singing backing vocals for several bands. I used that time to hone in on my skills and get comfortable on stage. Once I was ready to step out…it was ON!
Is this your first time to Halifax & the Halifax Pop Explosion Festival?
Third time to Halifax (LOVE IT). First time playing Halifax Pop Explosion.
What are you most looking forward to while in town?
Fingers crossed we have an amazing audience, meet tons of [other] artists (network) and sightseeing. Hoping to check out the Africville Museum.
Who or what is your creative inspiration?
Life experiences always seem to inspire songs.
Do you have another artist who is your musical inspiration?
If yes, who? AMY WINEHOUSE! Her writing and wit. And let’s not forget that voice. *holds hand over heart*
What is your fashion/style inspiration as an artist?
Distinct African textiles and unique clothing pieces with wide-brimmed fedoras. Or Kimonos. My style is constantly changing. At the end of the day, I just want to be comfortable.
Five pieces in your wardrobe right now?
Hot pink trenchcoat, rurquoise heels, wide-brimmed fedora, puffed shoulder denim jacket and a hot pink high-waisted skirt.
What song do you have on repeat right now?
Gavin Turek’s – Good Look For You.
What is one item that you never travel without?
What are you snacking on when you’re not on stage/performing?
Chocolate. Oh, and I LOVE juicing.
What kind of books/magazines do you read while on the road?
I always buy books on the road, read half and then come back to them later. Right now i’m reading, ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck’ by Mark Manson and ‘’I’ve got a Home in Glory Land’ by Karolyn Smardz Frost
Festival essential (fashion, food or otherwise)?
Did I mention face wipes? Face wipes.
What’s next for you & your music?
European tour in December & January and working on my next album!
Any tips/creative inspiration for upcoming artists?
If anyone tells you to “slow down” immediately release that person from your life. They don’t want you to win. Surround yourself with people that inspire YOU!
Catch her performance at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21st at The Carleton. Tanika Charles also performed on Friday, Oct. 20th at FORM MPC Presented by Live105.
